Democratic Candidate

For Winfield Township Supervisor

Many residents of Warrenville, West Chicago and Winfield don’t know very much about township government.  Taxes aren’t very high, but township services are even lower.  During my five terms on the Warrenville City Council, we interacted with officials from the fire, school, park and library districts, as well as the county, state and federal elected officials.   But the number of times I saw a Winfield Township Official come to us was zero.   In rural Illinois, the concept of township government makes more sense than it does in urban and suburban parts of the state.  Reading the state statues, townships are authorized to charge a permit fee for horse-drawn vehicles.  Perhaps it is time to update township government.

In the short term, I would work with other units of local government to maximize services for township residents in a cost-effective way.  I would start by proposing to slash my own supervisor salary to no more than the lowest full-time township employee.  I would empower township employees to give courteous service and take pride in their work.  I would run meetings in an efficient but open manner, taking all citizen comments seriously.   We would avoid conflicts of interest and scrupulously follow the open meetings act.   I am confident I could find ways to make township government efficient and cut taxes.

In the longer run, I would strive to find ways to consolidate services.  I would study what worked and what didn’t work in the proposals to consolidate road services in Naperville Township.   I would look at the additional services provided in Hanover Township and see if it would be appropriate and cost-effective to do the same in Winfield Township.  I would work with state legislators to find effective ways to streamline Township government for the benefit of all taxpayers.  I relish that challenge, since it will involve confronting vested interests of ineffective Democratic and Republican Township officials throughout Illinois.

We’ve had one-party rule in Winfield Township for as long as anyone can remember.  Local issues should not be partisan, and I would look forward to working with a township board consisting of Democratic and Republican Trustees for the benefit of all of the approximately 50,000 residents.

I look forward to the campaign, and am available for phone calls, zoom calls, and other avenues of discussion on the future of Winfield Township Government.
